BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Is it right for us?
Better At Us is designed for couples who have a fundamentally good relationship and want to make it even better. You may want to communicate more effectively, understand each other more deeply, strengthen your connection or simply develop better relationship skills together.
Because you’ll work through the framework together at home, it won’t be suitable for every relationship or every situation. The guidance below will help you decide whether Better At Us is likely to be a good fit for you, or whether another form of support may be more appropriate.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
Does Better At Us suit your relationship?
1.
IT MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU IF...
- You see value in your relationship and want to make it even better.
- You generally get on well but find yourselves getting stuck in the same places.
- You’re willing to think about the part you each play in your difficulties.
- You’re open to learning new ways of thinking and practical communication skills.
- You’d like to create a closer relationship with greater intimacy.
- You can generally manage your emotions, even if very occasionally you behave in ways you later wish you hadn’t.
- You want to understand yourselves and each other, rather than decide who is right or wrong.
- You’re not yet living together and want to prepare for that next step in your relationship.
- Nobody has ever taught you about relationships or how to communicate in any structured way, and you’d like to start learning.
- You want to become a highly skilled communicator and learn how to connect well both intellectually and emotionally with others.
2.
IT MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU IF...
- Your relationship is currently in crisis or one of you is seriously considering leaving.
- Either of you has significant feelings of anger, hurt or betrayal that need to be worked through before you can make progress together.
- Either of you is currently having individual therapy. If so, please discuss whether taking part is appropriate with your therapist or doctor first.
- Strong emotional reactions regularly make it difficult or impossible for you to stay in a conversation together.
- Only one of you wants to take part.
- Either of you has difficulties with reading, writing, understanding or learning new skills that would make it difficult to engage with the framework without appropriate support or adjustments.
- Either of you is currently receiving treatment for a condition that is not yet stable enough for you to engage comfortably with your emotions or the framework.
- Fear, intimidation, coercion, controlling behaviour or feeling unsafe forms part of your current relationship.
- You have little interest in understanding yourself, your reactions, or what may be going on inside you.
- Either of you is currently having an affair.
- Alcohol or drug use is currently affecting either of your abilities to engage safely and constructively with each other.
- You are having couples therapy at the same time.
